Joan Roddy
Art has always been a part of Joan's life. Her mother painted in oils and pastels and taught Joan at an early
age to love art. Joan graduated from Ashland High School and recieved a scholarship to Morehead College.
She transferred to Georgetown where she received her major in music and minor in art. After living out of
Kentucky for some years, she returned and began teaching piano and shared her love of art by occasionally
helping at her church or school. She recently began painting with watercolors at the University of Kentucky

Nelson Maynard
Nelson Maynard is a native of Pike County, Kentucky, who now lives in the hills of western Anderson
County. Spending his days disguised as a mild-mannered sewing machine technician, he is a teller of
tales, collector of cats, and great exponent of people-powered sewing. He is disappointed that he was
born too late to see a Zeppelin in flight, and that he missed the twilight of steam power on the Norfolk and
Western. He will, with the slightest encouragement, ramble on at tedious length about just why the Singer
66-1 treadle is possibly the finest household sewing machine ever made, so it's probably best not to ask.
He has been known to snap a picture now and again, and has a particular interest in old stonework,
forgotten roads, and other material echoes of human endeavors long past.
Sarah Jane Gray, M.F.A
Sarah Jane Gray received her MFA in art studio art at the University of Kentucky, with an emphasis in
ceramics this spring. Sarah Jane’s works have been exhibited in a number of venues, including the Mt.
Scott Arts Center in Portland, OR, and the Rogue Buddha Gallery in Minneapolis, MN. Sarah Jane currently
lives in Lexington with her husband, Silas, and an incorrigible one-eyed cat named Dingo. (Dingo, perhaps
could be the muse behind one of her most recent pieces: the adorable, snuggled-up ceramic sculpture she
generously donated to our auction!)

abstract paintings has recently been added to the permanent collection of the University of Kentucky. She
has won multiple awards and fellowships including the Mary Foote Fellowship (Indiana) and the Millenium
Award (UK). A solo exhibition of her work is planned this Fall for the Mayor's Office and the Councilman's
chambers at the Lexington Government Center.

blacksmith shop here in Lawrenceburg. Matthew is originally from East Kentucky and settled here in

railings out of forged steel, on private commission. His work can be seen in private residences primarily
in the areas surrounding Louisville, Lexington and Nashville,TN.
He is currently working on a public/community garden gate for Louisville, KY thanks to an 'Award of
Excellence' grant he received from the Kentucky Arts Council. Matthew has donated a unique hand forged
candle stick for our silent auction.
Betty McKinney Baldwin
Betty's piece was donated by Jim and Cheryl Rogers of Jim's Antiques.
Betty Baldwin is a native of Lexington who started sketching as a child and her passion of art has only
grown with time. From early childhood, she has worked with graphite, oils and watercolors. She now
devoted her time to drawing and watercolor. Her work is delicate and eclectic!
Betty was active in the Art League of Marco Island as a member of the Board of Directors which enabled
her to meet artists from all over the United States. She attended the Ringling School of Art & Design and
studied privately with max Muller. She has exhibited and sold her art throughout Florida and the
Southeastern United States.
Chad Balster, B.F.A.
Chad Balster is a contemporary glass artist based in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a resident artist at
downtown Louisville's Glassworks, and has generously donated this wall-hanging piece out of his love of
animals. Mr Balster migrated here from Minnesota after being offered the full-time residency at Glassworks
four years ago. He runs private classes on glassblowing and hosts Glasswork's private "Ornament
Blow" sessions, as well as continues to work in their open studio. Mr Balster has also recently been
commissioned to build a portable glass-blowing furnace for public performances of these techniques and
is an active member of the artist-based Ohio Valley Creative Energy.

spent mostly in Woodford County. After marrying in 1967 she moved to Anderson County where she now
lives with her family. Lois and her husband have two sons, Tim and Shane. Lois has sketched and
painted since high school, and started painting in acrylics in 1975. Having no formal training, she has
studied books and articles on art. Historical landmarks and nature scenes are what she loves to paint
most. Since she has been teased so much about using a hammer, she has started signing her work with a
hammer by her name.
